Phlegm-Dampness Constitution (痰湿质)

Dampness is metabolic heaviness. This type feels weighed down: a heavy, drowsy body, a soft bulky abdomen, a sticky mouth and excess phlegm, especially in the morning.

Common Signs

  • Body heaviness and drowsiness, hard to feel fully awake
  • Soft, flabby belly
  • Sticky or greasy feeling in the mouth
  • Frequent phlegm, especially in the morning

Eating for This Type

Favor: Light, dampness-resolving foods: coix seed (Job’s tears), winter melon, dried tangerine peel, radish, adzuki beans, leafy greens.

Go easy on: Sweets, greasy and fried food, dairy in excess, and late-night eating — all feed dampness.

Lifestyle Direction

Movement is the medicine: brisk walking until lightly sweating, most days. Eat earlier, lighter dinners and keep a regular rhythm.
